Overview & best season

Siargao sits on the Pacific-facing edge of the Philippines, where open-ocean groundswell hits a string of shallow coral reefs with little to block it. The island earned its reputation as the country's surf capital thanks to Cloud 9, but the same exposure feeds reef passes up and down the General Luna coast.

The season runs roughly September through March, peaking in the autumn months when typhoon and northeast swells line up. June through August is the quieter, smaller window. The scene is centered on General Luna, a laid-back town of guesthouses, cafes and surf shops a short ride from the breaks.

Waves & skill level

Cloud 9 is the marquee wave: a powerful, hollow right-hand reef break that pitches over a shallow coral shelf and runs into a clean channel, best on a rising mid-to-high tide. It is fronted by an iconic boardwalk that doubles as a viewing platform, and it draws a crowd when it is on.

The coastline is reef-break dominated, so the coral is shallow and unforgiving. Nearby options include Jacking Horse, a more forgiving wave that suits learners at mid-to-high tide; Stimpy's, a hollow left for confident surfers that works best near low tide; and softer, longer rides off Daku and the Guyam/Tri-Island area. Overall the island favors intermediate to advanced surfers, though Jacking Horse and the island breaks offer easier entry points.

Getting there & around

Most visitors fly into Sayak Airport (IAO) near Del Carmen, connecting through Cebu or Manila on carriers such as Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines; the runway is small, so flights can be weather-dependent. An alternative is flying to Surigao City on the mainland and taking a ferry across to Dapa, with morning crossings generally the calmest.

On the island, getting around is easy by rented motorbike or by hired tricycle and habal-habal, with most surf spots a short ride from General Luna.

Where to stay, hazards & etiquette

Base yourself in General Luna or the Cloud 9 area, which puts you within reach of the main breaks, food and rentals. Water is warm year-round at roughly 27–29°C (81–84°F), so boardshorts or a rashguard are enough.

The main hazards are the shallow coral reefs, sea urchins, and currents around the passes, plus crowds and a competitive lineup at Cloud 9 when it is firing. Reef booties help, and standard reef etiquette applies: respect the pecking order, do not drop in, and avoid standing on or damaging live coral.
