Overview & best season
Raglan is New Zealand's best-known wave and one of the most celebrated left-hand point breaks anywhere, immortalised in the 1966 surf film The Endless Summer. The point sits on the exposed west coast of the North Island, where Tasman Sea groundswell wraps into a coastline of black sand and dark volcanic boulders.
The waves are remarkably consistent, working across most of the year, with autumn and winter (March to September) typically offering the cleanest combinations of swell and wind. The town itself is small, laid-back and built around its surf culture rather than mass tourism.
Waves & skill level
Raglan is really one long point divided into linked sections. Manu Bay is the main, most accessible section and slightly more forgiving, delivering long, fast walls over rock. Whale Bay sits further up the point and is often less crowded, while Indicators and Outsides are the longest, fastest and most critical sections, best on a lower tide.
The waves peel as long, mechanical left-hand walls over a rock and boulder bottom. They are best on a southwest swell with a southeast offshore wind, and on a big day the sections can join up for rides of well over a kilometre. The point suits confident intermediate to advanced surfers comfortable with long rides and rocky entries and exits.
Getting there & around
Most visitors fly into Auckland (AKL), about a two-hour drive away, or into Hamilton (HLZ), roughly 45 minutes from town. From either airport the practical option is to drive, with rental cars available at both.
A car is essentially essential once you arrive. Raglan town sits a short drive from the points, and having your own vehicle lets you check the different sections and chase the tide and wind.
Where to stay, hazards & etiquette
Base yourself in Raglan town, which has the services and is close to both the beach breaks and the points. Expect cool water: a 4/3 wetsuit through the colder months and a 3/2 in summer, with boots a sensible option for the rocky bottom.
The main hazards are the rock and boulder bottom and the awkward rocky entries and exits, along with strong currents that run along the point. The breaks get crowded on good days and localism is real, so wait your turn, respect the lineup hierarchy, and don't paddle for every wave.
