Overview & best season
Centred on the town of Hossegor in the Landes, this stretch of France's southwest Atlantic coast is widely regarded as the beach-break capital of Europe. Long, exposed sand beaches run almost unbroken north toward the Gironde, with the better-known concentration of spots clustered around Hossegor, neighbouring Seignosse, and the harbour town of Capbreton.
The area has hosted top-level competition since the 1980s, and from 2002 the Quiksilver Pro France (with the women's Roxy Pro) made it a fixture on the world tour, run as a mobile event up and down the coast wherever the best banks lined up. The window to go is autumn: from September into October the swell returns, summer crowds thin out, and the water is still warm.
Waves & skill level
These are beach breaks over shifting sandbanks, so quality depends heavily on the sand being arranged correctly for the incoming swell and tide. When the banks are good, the waves are fast, powerful, and hollow. La Gravière is the standout, producing some of the heaviest, most barreling beach-break waves in Europe and breaking close to shore. La Nord and La Sud sit either side, and Capbreton's La Piste is another serious bank to the south.
The defining feature offshore is the Gouf de Capbreton, a deep submarine canyon that reaches the coast close to shore. Swell travelling up the canyon arrives with little drag from the seabed and refracts onto specific stretches of beach, focusing and amplifying its energy. The result is heavier, better-shaped waves than the open beaches to the north, and conditions that suit confident, experienced surfers when it is on.
Getting there & around
The closest airport is Biarritz (BIQ), roughly 30 minutes south by car. Bordeaux (BOD) is the larger gateway, about 1h45 to 2 hours away by motorway. The A63 runs the length of the coast and the TGV serves Bordeaux and Bayonne from Paris.
A car is the practical way to move along the Landes coast, since the good banks shift and the better spot on a given day may be several kilometres up or down the beach. Distances between Hossegor, Seignosse, and Capbreton are short, and bikes work well for getting around town and to the beaches in summer.
Where to stay, hazards & etiquette
Most surfers base in Hossegor itself, with Seignosse just to the north and Capbreton to the south as quieter alternatives, all within easy reach of the same spots. Accommodation ranges from campsites and surf camps to apartments and hotels, busiest in July and August.
The water runs from about 12°C in late winter to 22–23°C by late summer, so pack a 3/2mm for autumn, a thicker 4/3mm or 5/4mm with boots for winter, and only a shorty or boardshorts for high summer. Hazards are real: powerful shore dump on steep beaches, strong rips that shift with the sandbanks, and fast, heavy waves that close out on the wrong tide. Check the surf-school and lifeguard flags, respect the locals and the pecking order in the lineup at the better banks, and pick a spot that matches your level.
