Overview & best season

The Gold Coast strings a run of world-famous right-hand point breaks along its southern beaches, anchored by the Superbank, a near-continuous sandbar built by sand bypassing from the Tweed River. The Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve runs roughly 16 km from Burleigh Point to Snapper Rocks.

Swell arrives year-round, but the standout window is the summer-to-autumn cyclone season, when tropical lows in the Coral Sea send long-period groundswell into the points. The WSL Championship Tour's Gold Coast Pro is typically held at Snapper Rocks in autumn. The climate is warm and subtropical, and the marquee lineups are among the most crowded in the world.

Waves & skill level

Snapper Rocks marks the start of the Superbank, a long, fast sand-bottom right that on the best days connects through Rainbow Bay, Greenmount and Coolangatta toward Kirra. Burleigh Heads is a separate world-class right point that wraps around a rocky headland with steep, hollow sections. Kirra is the hollowest of the group when the sand sets up correctly, producing fast barrels.

These waves reward confident intermediate and advanced surfers. Duranbah, just over the New South Wales border, is a punchier beach break, while Currumbin Alley offers a mellower right suited to longboarders and improvers. Expect very heavy crowds at the points on any decent swell.

Getting there & around

Fly into Gold Coast Airport (OOL) at Coolangatta, which sits within walking distance of Snapper Rocks and the southern points. Brisbane Airport (BNE) is a larger international hub roughly 90 minutes north by road.

A car is the most practical way to get around, as the breaks are spread along the coast from Coolangatta up to Burleigh and the Spit. Parking near the points fills early on good days.

Where to stay, hazards & etiquette

Base in Coolangatta or Rainbow Bay for immediate access to Snapper, Kirra and Duranbah, or further north in Burleigh Heads for that point and a quieter feel. Water is mild year-round, so boardshorts cover summer and a 2mm or 3/2mm spring suit is plenty in winter.

The main hazards are crowds and the strong sweep that runs along the points, which can quickly carry you down the line; sharks are an occasional but real presence. Lineups are competitive and heavily localised, so respect the pecking order, do not drop in, and paddle wide of the priority takeoff zone at Snapper and Kirra.
