Overview & best season
The Basque Country is a single cultural region straddling the Spain–France border along the Bay of Biscay, with a dense, well-developed surf scene centred on towns like Mundaka, Bakio, San Sebastián and, across the border, Biarritz and Anglet. The coast faces northwest and picks up consistent North Atlantic swell.
Autumn through winter (September to March) is the prime window, when NW groundswells arrive with offshore southerly winds and the marquee waves come alive. Summer is smaller and far more crowded but reliable for beginners. Weather is mild and maritime, with frequent rain and changeable conditions year-round.
Waves & skill level
Mundaka, on the Urdaibai estuary, is the region's headline wave: a long, hollow left-hand barrel that breaks over a rivermouth sandbar. It needs a solid NW groundswell with a longer period and works best from low to mid tide with light southerly wind. When it lines up it is one of the best lefts in Europe, but the sandbank shifts year to year, the takeoff is critical and it suits advanced surfers only.
La Zurriola, in San Sebastián's Gros district, is an exposed urban beach break with shifting peaks across the sand. It holds waves at most tides and offers everything from gentle whitewater for learners on smaller days to punchier, hollower peaks when a bigger swell hits, making it the region's most accessible all-round spot. Numerous surf schools operate here.
Getting there & around
Bilbao Airport (BIO) is the main gateway for the Spanish side and sits roughly 45 minutes by car from Mundaka. For San Sebastián, Biarritz (BIQ) just across the French border is often the closest international option, with San Sebastián's small airport (EAS) also nearby.
A rental car is the most practical way to move between spots, as breaks are spread along the coast and conditions vary point to point. Mundaka is also reachable from Bilbao on the Euskotren line, and San Sebastián has good local and regional transport, but a car gives the flexibility to chase the right tide and swell.
Where to stay, hazards & etiquette
San Sebastián makes a comfortable base with La Zurriola in town and easy access to French and Spanish breaks. For Mundaka, basing in the village itself or nearby Bakio puts you next to the wave. Expect water from about 11°C in winter, calling for a 4/3 with boots and gloves, to roughly 20–22°C in summer, when a 3/2 is enough.
Hazards vary by spot. Mundaka breaks over a shallow sandbar with strong estuary currents and undertow, and the lineup is tight, crowded and tightly localised, so respect the pecking order and do not drop in. La Zurriola has rip currents, especially near the jetty, and gets busy with schools and beginners. Standard priority and right-of-way etiquette applies everywhere.
