Overview & best season

Arugam Bay sits on Sri Lanka's southeast coast and is the country's best-known surf town. It runs counter to the rest of the island: the southwest monsoon (May–September) that brings rain and onshore wind to the south and west coast delivers Arugam Bay's swell and offshore mornings, so it becomes the obvious destination when Hikkaduwa and Weligama go quiet.

The scene is relaxed and surf-focused. The town is a single strip of guesthouses, cafes and surf shops, and most spots are clustered within a short tuk-tuk ride of one another. July and August are the busiest and most consistent months.

Waves & skill level

The marquee wave is Main Point, a long right-hand point that peels over a sand-and-reef bottom right beside town. It is forgiving on small days but holds size, offering rides of several hundred metres when the sandbars are formed up.

The surrounding spots are also right-hand points and cover a range of abilities. Elephant Rock and Whiskey Point have mellow takeoffs and sand bottoms that suit beginners and improvers; Peanut Farm offers an A-frame peak and a longer right; and Pottuvil Point, to the north, is the longest and most powerful of the group and rewards confident surfers on bigger swells. All of them need southwest swell to break.

Getting there & around

Most visitors fly into Colombo (CMB) and then face a long overland trip of roughly six to eight hours by car or van. Mattala (HRI) in the south is considerably closer at around three hours but has limited flights. Trains and buses serve the region but still require transfers.

Once in town, getting around is easy and cheap. Tuk-tuks shuttle surfers to Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Pottuvil, and many people rent a scooter to reach the outer points with their boards.

Where to stay, hazards & etiquette

Base yourself in Arugam Bay town itself, where accommodation, food and board rental are concentrated and Main Point is walkable. The water is warm enough that boardshorts and a rash guard are all you need.

Watch for rocks and shallow reef at the points, strong sun, and crocodiles, which inhabit the nearby Pottuvil Lagoon and other inland waterways rather than the surf breaks. Respect the local lineups, expect to share crowded peaks in peak season, and budget time for the paddles and walks between points, as the outer spots involve a short trek from where the tuk-tuk drops you.
