Overview & best season

The Algarve's southwestern corner around Sagres and Vila do Bispo is one of the few places where two coastlines meet at a point. The west coast faces the open Atlantic and takes the full force of North Atlantic swell, while the south coast wraps around the headland and sits sheltered behind it.

That geography is the region's defining advantage. When a big west swell or a strong onshore wind makes the exposed beaches unmanageable, you can drive a few minutes to the other coast and find smaller, cleaner, offshore waves. Winter brings the largest and most reliable swell; summer is smaller and warmer, suiting beginners and longboarders. The surf scene is centred on Sagres town and, further north, the village of Aljezur, both well set up with schools and rental gear.

Waves & skill level

On the exposed west and southwest side, Tonel is a powerful sandy beach break with scattered rocks and multiple peaks, sheltered from north winds by its cliffs and best left to confident surfers when it is big. Just around the headland, Beliche produces some of the area's bowliest, wedging waves over sand-covered rock - a punchy beach break that is rarely beginner-friendly.

Mareta, on the south side in the heart of Sagres, is the opposite: the most sheltered beach in town, staying smaller and cleaner when the west is pumping, which makes it the go-to for learners and longboarding. To the north near Aljezur, Arrifana sits in a dramatic cliff-backed bay and offers both a gentle beach break in the centre, good for beginners, and a right-hand point on the southern side that works on a solid west swell and draws experienced surfers.

Getting there & around

Fly into Faro (FAO), the region's main airport, roughly 1h30 from Sagres by car. The A22 motorway runs the length of the Algarve and is now toll-free for passenger vehicles, making the drive west straightforward.

A car is essential here. The whole appeal of the area is being able to switch between the west and south coasts as the swell and wind change, and the breaks are spread across the Costa Vicentina with limited public transport. All the major rental firms have desks at Faro airport.

Where to stay, hazards & etiquette

Sagres is the natural base for the southern tip, with Tonel, Mareta and Beliche all close by; Aljezur and the village of Arrifana suit a west-coast focus, and Lagos to the east offers a larger town with more amenities within easy reach. Water runs from around 16C (61F) in winter to 21-23C (70-73F) in late summer, so plan on a 3/2mm wetsuit most of the year, a 4/3mm and boots in winter, and a shorty at the summer peak.

The west-coast breaks have real hazards: exposed rock and reef, strong currents and rips, and wind that turns onshore quickly. Check the forecast, respect the conditions, and use the sheltered south coast when the west is too big. This is a busy, popular region, so standard lineup etiquette applies - wait your turn, do not drop in, and give beginners and schools room on the mellower beaches.
